The Designing of: Bumpie Stickers
How might we provide more value and increase our user’s engagement with our bumpie tool?
The bumpie tool is a photo tool that was originally launched in 2014 as an MVP feature in the My Pregnancy Today app. It allows pregnant women to photograph their baby bumps every week and watch them grow. When I joined the team, the product team wanted to increase engagement by adding more value with stickers.
We started by researching how other apps add stickers into their camera flows. We looked at apps like Facebook, pic lab, and line. We noticed they all had some sort of “drawer” component to hold the stickers. If they had multiple packs of stickers, you could swipe to see more packs.
DESIGNING THE FLOW
We decided the only logical place was to put the stickers directly after a user took a photo. We needed to still allow the user to write a note about the photo, so we created two tabs, one for stickers and one for a note or caption.
DESIGNING THE STICKERS
For the first pack of stickers, we wanted to continue owning the concept of comparing the developing baby’s size to a fruit or vegetable each week. It would serve as a delightful layer over her photo and an educational representation that mom can share to her family and friends.
We encourage mom to share to instagram using #bcbumpie. It’s so exciting to see moms using the stickers in different ways. All images came from Instagram by searching #bcbumpie.
THE RE-DESIGN FOR MY PREGNANCY AND BABY TODAY APP
When BabyCenter made the decision to combine their pregnancy and baby apps, we needed to completely re-skin the bumpie tool. This meant re-designing the tool icon, updating the headers and buttons to take on our primary blue, and taking another stab at a possible alternate full page sticker drawer concept. This concept was unfortunately de-scoped due to budgeting and timing.
